Beyonce apologizes for ‘XO’ song offence

Beyonce’s record breaking album didn’t come without any controversy! The Queen of Rnb found herself in hot water when she used a sample of the audio from the explosion of the 1986 NASA challenger in her song ‘XO’

The NASA challenger exploded mid-air 73 secods after launching killing all 7 astronauts aboard. Family and friends of the astronauts as well as many in the NASA community felt that the use of the audio was very insensitive, with many even calling for Beyonce to donate all proceedings to the song to the Challenger Learning Centre.

The single features a 6 second sample from the live TV Broadcast. Steve Nesbitt from the NASA public affairs office can be heard saying ‘Flight Controllers here looking very carefully at the situation .Obviously a major malfunction’

Beyonce released the following statement in relation to the controversy

My heart goes out to the families of those lost in the Challenger disaster. The song ‘XO’ was recorded with the sincerest intention to help heal those who have lost loved ones and to remind us that unexpected things happen so love and appreciate every minute that you have with those who mean the most to you. The songwriters included the audio in tribute to the unselfish work of the Challenger crew with hope that they will never be forgotten.
