South Africa’s first black president and anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela has died, South Africa’s president says.
Mr Mandela, 95, led South Africa’s transition from white-minority rule in the 1990s, after 27 years in prison. He had been receiving intense home-based medical care for a lung infection after three months in hospital.
The winner of the 1993 The Nobel Peace Prize, the political leader led peace talks even after being imprisoned for nearly 3 decades. His death is a great loss to not only the South African nation but also the world, who through Mandela saw that the journey to peace and reconciliation is never futile regardless of how dire the prospects seem.
Rest in Peace Nelson Mandela
